A 70-300 f5.6 is comparable to a 70-200 f2.8 for some uses, but many people would argue that they are really not comparable. Likewise with these lenses. I would say that a lens much more comparable to the Olympus 12-100 would be the Nikon 24-200 f4-f6.3. Instead, Nikon has released a range of new lenses in a similar focal length, such as the AF-S VR 70-200mm f /2.8G lens in 2003. The new lenses include Internal focusing (IF), vibration reduction (VR), and a fully-electronic control system which does without the traditional aperture control ring (G).
NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 28-75mm f/2.8 @ 58mm, ISO 64, 1/20, f/4.0. As for build quality and handling, the 24-70mm f/2.8 is definitely more advanced. The main benefit is that you get more controls on the 24-70mm f/2.8, including a function button and an additional control ring. The 28-75mm f/28 is an extremely sparse lens by comparison.
By f/8, the lenses are a bit more comparable, although the 24-70mm f/4 S still has the edge. By f/11 and f/16, diffraction has evened out lens performance to the point where the two are nearly identical. And here is how the lenses look at 50mm: The Nikon Z 24-70mm corner sharpness drops at 50mm, but unfortunately so does that of the 24-120mm f/4.
In terms of things like size and weight, the two lenses are more similar than you may expect. The Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S is exactly 500 grams (1.1 pounds), while the Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR is 570 grams (1.26 pounds). That difference isn’t enough to notice most of the time, unless you’re doing some serious ultra-distance backpacking msjtV.
